Visual Essay Reflection

End Femicide Visual

April 24, 2025

For my visual essay assignment I decided to choose an Instagram post, which consisted of a picture reflecting women’s domestic violence (femicide) and a quote in the post. The main point of this post was to get the attention of men and address the issues of violence especially against women. When creating the content of women violence I had to take into account how I can represent women violence. It was very important to capture the essence of violence because every detail mattered, in this case I was thrilled and excited to take part as I took pictures of the model and adjusted the different angles, positions, and lighting. I was the photographer and Emily was the model that made everything come together. We both worked together to get materials, equipment, location, and different positions. The materials we used were red, brown, and burgundy water colors to create the fake blood. We also used black chalk to capture the essence and details of a used and dirty T-shirt stained with blood. We also took into account the location of our project because the concrete wall helped give a more accurate and detailed picture.

I chose this genre because I believed that social media was the best way to catch the attention of my audience since we live in a modern time, where people spend most of their time on social media like Instagram. Creating this post was quite hard and interesting because I had to create a quote that would catch the attention of my audiences and try to convey the message in a way that people (men) can be intrigued and curious. I have learned a lot throughout the process, in the first draft I made many common mistakes, for example, when Jane revised it and told me that I should improve the title and make it clear that the main topic was femicide, as well as fixing the quote. The rhetorical strategies we used in my project was ethos, which attracted and conveyed the audience’s emotions. We took into account that Emily did not want to show her face but also wanted to capture the intense feeling of what violence could look like. The position we took when creating the photo is putting fake blood in her hand and covering her face with her hands by placing her hand closer to the camera. This was crucial during the photograph because it focused on the hand and made the background a bit blurry capturing the details and making it more realistic.

Creating the visual essay differs from doing a traditional essay because it lets the creativity of a writer grow by experimenting new ways to get the audience interested and attention. In a visual essay the use of words are not necessary because the visual part itself should let you have an idea of what is the main message, the quote, and the title just briefly describing the image intention and topic. Finally, I would like to say that I really enjoy doing this assignment. Emily and I had a greater time working together in the photo. We put our best effort to make sure that the photo transmits the topic message. We really worked great together. However, even though I had issues creating my quote since I did not know how to correctly reach my audience, I really like to work on it. I did not use any A.I.. I took the photo and created my own quote. At first I was considerate of the idea of using it but then I realized that since this topic was really important and the use of A.I. did not seem like a great option. This is because femicide is a crucial topic and it should be addressed by creating. However, I did use a fake instagram post simulation to create the post, the website is called Zeeob, which allows you to edit blank posts and include anything from profile pictures, posters, and comments to make it seem realistic. After completing my photo and quote when I uploaded it into the simulator. After that I uploaded it in brightspace and sent it.
